Durante la lettura, i poliglotti tradurrebbero, senza accorgersene, nella propria lingua.

Ciò avverrebbe in modo meccanico. In altre parole, il cervello avrebbe le funzioni di un traduttore automatico. Però, non tradurrebbe tutto! Uno studio ha mostrato che il cervello avrebbe un filtro incorporato, il quale decide cosa tradurre. Questo filtro ignorerebbe determinate parole, tra cui quelle con un’accezione negativa. In un esperimento, alcuni ricercatori hanno esaminato un gruppo di parlanti di madrelingua cinese, la cui seconda lingua era l’inglese. A queste persone si chiedeva di classificare diverse parole inglesi. Si trattava di parole dotate di un contenuto emotivo, con accezioni positive, negative e neutre. Durante la lettura di questi vocaboli, l’attività cerebrale dei soggetti che partecipavano all’esperimento era oggetto di misurazione. In questo modo, era possibile capire come funziona il cervello. Durante la traduzione delle parole, venivano prodotti molti segnali, che indicavano l’attività cerebrale in corso. Nel tradurre parole con accezione negativa, l’attività si arrestava. Soltanto i vocaboli con un significato positivo o neutro erano oggetto di traduzione. I ricercatori non hanno saputo identificare le motivazioni alla base di tale fenomeno. In teoria, il cervello dovrebbe elaborare tutte le parole allo stesso modo, ma nella pratica, il filtro procederebbe ad una breve analisi delle singole parole. Lo studio è stato esteso anche alla seconda lingua. Anche in questo caso si è rilevato che, in presenza di parole con un significato negativo, la memorizzazione subirebbe una battuta d’arresto. Pertanto, il fenomeno non può ricondursi alla lingua madre. Gli uomini reagiscono in modo molto sensibile alle parole. Forse il cervello vuole proteggerci da shock emotivi … Le lingue africane
